2010 Quilt Show - October 1-3, 2010
Should I Enter the Quilt Show?
As we make quilt show announcements, and you read the quilt show packet
that arrived at your home, you are probably wondering if you should
enter the show. You have valid reasons. You have never entered. You
wonder if your work is good enough. You know your work is incredible and
wonder if you would be showing off. So many considerations!
But we have a simple answer for you. Yes – you should enter the show.
Our quilt show is about sharing the talents of our many members. We are
not a juried show like Paducah or Houston. Yet – our show is incredible.
One person brings incredible technical skill, yet another may blow us
away with a sense of color. Every quilt that has ever hung at our show
can be appreciated for a beautiful gift it brings.
This year we are offering a rookie category, so first time entrants are
all competing against each other if that’s how you choose to enter. We
have judges brand new to us, so we all get a new perspective.
You received one entry in your show packet, but more are available on
the Forms page. Another way you can have a quilt in the show is the
Small Quilt Auction! Carol Taylor, a past speaker, has already donated a
quilt. Quilts up to 36” square are welcome. You donate a quilt, we
auction it off, and proceeds go towards our charities.
Take a look at your quilts and decide what you are going to enter. You
may enter up to six! Be realistic – evaluate what you can get done in
time. The quilt top must be finished in the picture you submit with your
entry. Book your longarm quilter now. Perfect your binding skills. Be
part of Quilts on the Grand 2010.

Small Quilt Auction Hosting Viewer’s Choice
Ribbon Opportunity at Summer Event
The Small Quilt Auction is held within the WMQG quilt show, “Quilts on
the Grand.” You make and donate small quilts by September 28th, and
quilts are sold in a silent auction during the show. The 2008 auction
raised over $1000 towards our charity donation! To help motivate you to
get your quilt done, we are having a little contest at our July Event.
Bring your completed quilt and paperwork to our July 27th meeting.
Members will get a ballot to vote on their favorite, and we will award a
custom made ribbon.
Your quilts will hang in a special spot at the show where attendees can
take a look and place a bid. To place a bid, you fill out a quick form
with contact information and then get assigned a number. You use that
number to place your bid. So let’s say you fill out your form and get
assigned #1. You like Carol Taylor’s “Purple Star” quilt. Find the
bidding sheet for Carol Taylor’s “Purple Star” quilt and write #1, bid
$??, and feel quite proud of yourself…not only did you donate money to
two charities, but you might get a “top name” quilt for a bargain price.
Check back – other people can bid after you! After the bidding time is
up, winning bidders are contacted for payment and pickup (although we
hope most with be in the building to come back and check in). We hope to
have all the quilts to their new homes by the end of the show. Come by
the show Sunday afternoon to make your final bids, and hang around to
pick up your quilt entries!
We are looking for quilts that are 36” or less on all sides. They can be
intended as a wall- hanging, table runner, baby quilt, doll bed quilt…
Last show we had 40 quilts; let’s see if we can beat that this year.
There is a Small Quilt Submission Form in your Quilt Show packet. Just
fill it in, and attach it to your quilt. Then give it to Susan Smith or
Sue Cortese (we are both members of the program committee and can
usually be found at that table). Our donation deadline is September
28th.
Come to the show ready to place a winning bid on some great small
quilts…don’t forget to bring some extra cash or the checkbook! Small
Quilt Auction bidding will end at 3pm on Sunday October 3rd; with the
show closing at 5pm. |
